Serving

4–6 Servings

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of black sesame seeds
  • 1 cup of white sesame seeds
  • 2 ½ cups of buckwheat flour
  • 2 teaspoons of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of sea salt or kosher salt
  • 1 cup of plain yogurt
  • ¼ cup of minced garlic
  • ¼ cup of ground coriander
  • ½ cup of rice or almond milk
  • 2 teaspoons of olive or almond oil
  • 1 cup of warm water, divided
  • Ghee or coconut oil spray, for cooking

Method

Step 1

Begin by combining the black and white sesame seeds in a small bowl.

Step 2

In a large bowl, mix together the buckwheat flour, baking powder, and salt.

Step 3

Add yogurt, minced garlic, ground coriander, rice milk, olive oil, and ½ cup of water. Knead the mixture into a dough for approximately 5 minutes, adding more water as needed to achieve the desired consistency.

Step 4

Divide the dough into six balls on a floured surface and allow them to rest for 5 minutes.

Step 5

Roll out each ball into thin ovals using a rolling pin.

Step 6

In a grill pan or large skillet, melt ghee and cook the ovals individually for 1 to 2 minutes per side until golden brown, flipping with a spatula as needed. Add more ghee to the pan as necessary.

Step 7

Serve the naan warm.

Nutrition Tips

  • Vatas:

Substitute buttermilk for yogurt, cow's milk for rice milk, and opt for wheat, oat, or rice flours.

  • Pittas:

Choose soy yogurt or dilute plain yogurt with water for a lighter option.

  • Kaphas:

Enjoy this naan with dinner or as a quick breakfast by spreading with jam or honey for a convenient on-the-go meal.
